A bank reconciliation is the process of matching the balances in an entity's accounting records for a cash account to the corresponding information on a bank statement. The goal of this process is to ascertain the differences between the two, and to book changes to the accounting records as appropriate.

          Reconciling your bank account on a regular basis is critical. When you get to the year-end, if this doesn't reconcile your account will be wrong. You could end up paying too much tax because you've missed allowable expenses. Or you risk fines and penalties from the tax authorities because you've miss taxable income. Or you have to pay higher accountancy fees for the accountant to sort it out.
